We want you to understand our goals, background, schedule, and process, so you can make educated decisions about your pet’s grooming. doggie.designs was founded by Katie Fisher in October 2019. doggie.designs has an open floor plan, designed for comfort, safety, and visual observation. We believe that giving our customers the ability to see all aspects of our work is key in building trust between client and groomer, which helps to also forge trust between groomers and pets. Essentially, if you are comfortable leaving your furry family here, then your pet will have an easier time adjusting to the company of their groomer. doggie.designs generally uses what we call “staggered scheduling,” as opposed to one-on-one booking or block scheduling. This type of scheduling gives us, as a business, the efficiency needed to keep prices lower, while also giving us the “wiggle room,” as animal lovers, to give your furry companion extra love and patience when needed. Your pets appointment will proceed in the same fashion every time - consistency is very important in building trust with animals! First your pet goes right to the tub (unless any prep work like pre-shaving or a blow-out is needed), for a scrub down with our Earthbath shampoos and conditioners. After a towel dry, your pet will be hand dried. doggie.designs has a few different dryers to make sure any pet’s needs are met. Our high velocity dryer is most used, as it does the best job of drying hair straight for a perfect cut, blowing out undercoat, and detangling small knots. A variable speed dryer is a great option for pets who are afraid of loud noises or pressure, especially cats and puppies. A stand dryer helps us to get those small spots on pets that are mostly okay with the dryer, but perhaps are shy about their feet or their face. As a last resort, doggie.designs can use cage dryers for pets that cannot tolerate any hand drying for whatever reason, while always monitoring them for signs of stress (thanks to our open-concept floor plan). You can always have a conversation with your groomer if you feel cage drying is not a good fit for your pet! After you pets blow-out, they are ready for a break. doggie.designs believes that rushing through grooming a pet is often unnecessarily stressful (not just for the pet, but for the groomer too). Your pet will be crated for a short period, usually about 20-30 minutes, while his or her groomer works on another pet; either washing and drying the next customer, or finishing a groom on a previous customer. This part of grooming is more important than many realize; helping your pet become accustomed to being crated during their grooming process, while not always exactly necessary at younger ages, will help your pet in the long run if they are unable to stand for long periods of time as they get older. Lastly is the finishing touches, and a phone call to let you know your pet is ready to go home. This service is for those looking for a show-groom look for their pet, especially breeds like Poodles and Bichons. A full body hand-scissor skips the electric clippers, and the body is trimmed down all over using scissors only. Typically these cuts are longer, and require more in-between maintenance at home. The coarser your dog’s coat is, the better fit it is to be a candidate for hand-stripping. (If your wire-coated dog has been previously shaved, hand-stripping may be difficult, uncomfortable, and sometimes impossible.) Hand-stripping is a process that involves pulling out the longest guard hairs by the root, allowing room for new and healthier growth. This allows the follicles room to breath, and keeps the coat shiny and healthy, typically reducing dander and smell as a side benefit. This process isn’t generally painful for dogs, however, some pets who are unused to the process may have trouble adjusting at first. We always keep your pets comfort in mind, so some hand-stripped dogs should have short but regular stripping sessions instead of long, rare stripping sessions.
